Music Review: Justin Bieber’s “Purpose”

By Justin Dela Cruz

Despite Justin Bieber’s sad and miserable past, that’s not to deny his musical capabilities, at least in his newest production entitled, “Purpose.”

Opening with the chilling and melodic, “Mark My Words,” Bieber makes it clear that this new album aims to “rekindle” the connection between him and his fans (and perhaps newer fans who actually appreciate his music). This is followed by the more upbeat, “I’ll Show You,” dealing with a similar message.

The third and fourth tracks, “What Do You Mean,” and, “Sorry,” are both great tracks respectively. Unlike past Bieber tracks, it’s obvious he has changed in his musical tones to a more electronic genre. And for good reason as to attract a wider audience such as myself.

From here on out, each of the following tracks have not been released as a single except for the, “Where Are Ü Now,” produced by Skrillex and Diplo, both of whome are electronic dance music artists. Perhaps the best of these tracks is, “Love Yourself.” A simple song produced solely by Justin’s singing and an electric guitar in the background to keep a lovely progression, this is probably my favorite track of the entire album.

Due to the honest fact that I did not have the patience to listen to the entire album, previewing the songs on iTunes came in handy in noting honorable mentions which include, “Life is Worth Living,” “No Pressure,” and, “No Sense,” featuring Travis Scott. These selections were a matter of personal preference rather than actual quality of music. However, that should not inhibit your opinion as to whether or not Bieber’s music is of bad quality, and to be quite frank: it really isn’t.

Justin Bieber’s, “Purpose,” is definitely something new. Something aspiring to contain at least a single track likable by everyone. Although not directly aimed towards country fans or maybe those of/before the early 20th century, I can’t 100% guarantee that you will enjoy his new album as a whole, but perhaps there does exist a single song to satisfy your musical tastes.
